The Hold Steady – Heaven Is Whenever

This is the first play of the entire new Hold Steady Album courtesy of NPR. Being a big time listener of the Hold Steady this is quite exciting news. First impressions: I’m happy. I cant place my reaction to this in much more complex terms than this. The lyrics are vintage Craig Finn, there is still the occasional piano flicker and “woah-oh-oh” backing despite Franz Nicolay moving on to pastures new and the power chords riff and roll about like they should. The whole band step up to the plate and hit the mark.

But it seems that the album only scores points when its repeating jackpot moments of previous works. If you have been listening to The Hold Steady for a while then you aren’t going to fall off your chair or struggle to keep your jaw closed. If you haven’t got into the band until recently then you really missed out on some serious chair abuse and slackened mouth moments.

But now I feel like THS can’t win, they tried experimenting on Stay Positive with a wooping synth and jambering harpsichord and it was just baffling, but then this is the kind of nonplussed love I have when they play by my rules. It must suck having me as a fan.

All in all its a lot better than Stay Positive, hasn’t quite gone as wide-eyed big time as Boys and Girls in America but it is nearly as cool as Separation Sunday. I thought I would give you my favourite splash of the 4 records before Heaven Is Whenever. For those of you who would quite like to fall off a chair, please take a seat.

The Hold Steady – Most People Are DJs (The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me 2004)

The Hold Steady – Stevie Nix (Separation Sunday 2005)

The Hold Steady – First Night (Boys And Girls In America 2006) Compare the first and second halves of this and Stevie Nix

The Hold Steady – Magazines (Stay Positive 2008)

Heaven Is Whenever will be available from May 3rd in the UK and it would a tragedy if the band dont get a move on and book some more festival dates.
