Ra Ra Riot – Boy [download]

Slightly drenched in reverb and box tickingly good. Conventional pop music = rhythm and lead melody, but it’s easier said than done. Or not apparently for Ra Ra Riot. The drums and bass are exceptional and for the first chunk of Boy they completely steal the show managing to remain understated and simple whilst the sleek production allows them to sparkle delightfully. Wes Miles applies his effortless signature vocal and the occasional collapsible guitar refrain bubbles into play to make up the icing of a cake that is actually hugely reminiscent of Vampire Weekend.

So yeah another winner from a consistent band who are going to have to make sure that their new album (out on Arts & Crafts) is either really awful or the landmark achievement of the century or I shall just smile and nod.
